What is the Church?

Have you given much thought to that question?  Is it a place reserved for special occasions like weddings, funerals, Christmas or Easter?  Maybe it’s the building down the street with a steeple?  Perhaps it’s a club to which people belong?  While a church building is certainly a good place to have special occasions and it may have a steeple, the Church is not a building at all.

Does anyone remember the1970’s hymn “We are the Church”?  The first verse goes like this:  “The church is not a building, the church is not a steeple, the church is not a resting place, the church is a people.”  The song itself may seem a little silly to some, but its words are exactly right.  The Church is a people who follow Christ with a mission to “make disciples of all nations.”

Unfortunately, the Church in America is dying.  Our goal for Be the Church is to help individuals and congregations learn why this is happening and what can be done about it.  We want the Church to be who and what God intended it to be.  We want there to be a Church for future generations.  If this is your desire as well, stay tuned for future messages.

Let’s go Be the Church!

  1. Great job! You’re doing a great job.

  2. Wonderful. I am so very proud of you!

  3. Your post caught my attention. I am a pastor’s wife and I feel as you do. Too many play the church game and in America we are in trouble. It’s time to be the church. My husband and I believe the church of Jesus needs to be active and moving into the areas that need to hear the message. I’m interested in your posts and emails. I will keep an eye out for them. Blessings….Carol
